:: About Cindy Brandner

I live in the interior of British Columbia with a menagerie that includes: one husband, three children, two dogs, one cat and an assortment of impermanent lodgers otherwise known as ‘neighbourhood children.’

The two great passions of my life are writing and Irish history, in writing Exit Unicorns I have, I hope, fused these two elements together. Much of the fiction I read today has left me feeling that, while the writing was technically good, there wasn’t enough story to sink my teeth into. I believe myself to be a storyteller before all else. Thousands of years ago I’d of sat by the tribal fire and woven tales for my shaggy-haired listeners. Very simply, it’s what I was meant to do.

I’ve traveled extensively in Ireland, particularly in the North where my story takes place. I walked the streets where history was made and smelled the smoke and blood of those times. I spoke with people on both sides of the political and religious divide about their beliefs and their struggles- this included a particularly memorable evening in an IRA pub. I drew from my own family history as well, the stories told by my great-grandmother who was a native of Belfast and left the country she loved because of political upheaval.

Currently I’m hard at work on the continuing story of Jamie, Pamela and Casey that began with Exit Unicorns.

:: October 2010- A letter from Cindy

Hello Everyone,

It’s been a very long time since I updated this section of the website. It’s October now and another year is drawing toward its end, so I thought I should let everyone know where the book is at in terms of it actually being complete sometime soon.

I hate to forecast when I might actually finish any given work, because inevitably I miss that deadline and then feel guilty over it. But I do think that I will have the first draft completed by the spring. After that, of course, it has to go through a few hands that very generously look it over for me, provide corrections to grammar and punctuation and any gliches in the timeline. Then it comes back to me and I slowly work through all the corrections. Lastly it goes out to two readers that are coming to it completely fresh and they read it through for me and let me know if anything jumps out and hits them on the nose and all that takes time, as you might well imagine.

I hope you are all having a lovely fall- the weather here has been sublime. I wish fall lasted as long as winter does here, but no such luck.

Thanks to everyone who reads my book for their patience- it does take me quite awhile to write each one, but I want them to be as good as I can possibly make them- so I take my time.

Slainte, Cindy
